Variable speed fluid coupling
Variable speed fluid couplings are used to control speed-adjustable motors. Unlike permanent magnet motors, hydrodynamic couplings do not require permanent magnets to work. Fluid coupling systems are relatively reliable and typically include oil pumps, oil filters and control systems. Two important factors to consider when choosing a fluid coupling are mean time to failure and mean time to repair.
This coupling system is designed to provide fast response and smooth stepless speed control over a wide speed range. Its unique 4-to-1 scoop-to-tube turndown ratio allows quick acceleration from standstill to running. It also limits torque and enables no-load starting under high inertia loads.
The coupling assembly and reservoir assembly can be mounted on a level surface with the motor, allowing the motor to connect directly to it. Improved coupling and reservoir assemblies minimize frictional drag and are extremely compact. Both the improved coupling assembly and the reservoir assembly are designed to fit in conventional motor housings.
In the past, motor burnout accidents have been caused by a lack of understanding of how the equipment works. Improper use of equipment is another reason. A poorly performing fluid coupling can cause the motor to overheat. In this case, the oil must be ventilated to prevent it from overheating. Another reason is the inability to maintain a constant voltage level on the power lines.
Variable speed fluid couplings are an effective choice for variable speed motors. They achieve high power density and are compact enough for indoor and outdoor installations. Fluid couplings are easy to operate and have low initial costs. But they have a common disadvantage - they cause repeated power losses at the speed at which the motor is operating.
Variable speed fluid couplings are typically used in high-speed applications and where precise speed control is required. Compared to static control, variable speed fluid couplings save energy and reduce environmental impact. However, they are not suitable for all applications. Fluid couplings are best suited for high volume pumps, high speed pumps and high ID fans.
Variable speed static drive
The advantage of a static drive is the ability to provide different speeds without additional power loss. It is easy to use and the initial cost is economical. However, recurring power loss can be a disadvantage. The payback period for a static drive depends on various factors, including the size of the drive and the frequency and duration of speed control.
The drive can be set to restart automatically after an overload or power loss. It can also be set to provide regenerative braking when needed. Additionally, variable speed drives can use an external speed reference to control mechanical brakes. They are available in AC and DC forms.
Variable speed drives are also available as friction or traction drives. The former is more energy efficient than the latter. On the other hand, when the drive is connected to multiple motors, the latter is less efficient. Variable speed drives eliminate this inefficiency.
Eddy current adjustable speed drive systems can provide variable torque loads, albeit in a relatively small speed range. However, it can supply loads such as process pumps or extruders at much lower speeds.
